Former Zee Studio executive Akash Chawla is launching Fresh Lime Films, focusing on the creation of digital content and feature films.

The venture aims to take Indian stories to audiences around the world. Chawla, who left Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) in February, spent 12 years at the Indian media giant – most recently as head of the content studio, creating and monetising content across platforms. His duties included establishing film projects across languages – one of the films he set up and produced was Akshay Kumar’s Hindi blockbuster Rustom.

Chawla joined as brand head for Zee in 2005, and then became head of marketing for Zee Cinema in 2009. He was also head of marketing for ZEEL’s national TV channels, and became business head of Zee TV in 2016.

Acquiring a number of Hindi films for satellite distribution, and establishing overseas film distribution networks across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia Pacific were also roles Chawla took on for ZEEL. Recently he sold the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) rights of Marathi film Sairat to Netflix, and produced the first web series for Zee’s over-the-top (OTT) platform.
