Currency fluctuations are affecting pay-TV prices for end users in Mexico, telecom authority IFT has revealed.
Based on data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), the IFT has said that telecom prices are, on average, falling. In fact, by the end of 2016, end users were paying 2.8% less than a year prior.
However, within the telecom industry, pay-TV’s prices have grown by 4.5%, mostly due to the currency exchange differences between the US dollar and the Mexican peso, according to the IFT.
Price instability is one of pay-TV’s main challenges in Latin America, where currency fluctuations have a strong impact on the market.
However, mobile telecom prices went down by 7% during the 2015-2016 period, “mostly due to increasing competition between Telcel, Movistar, AT&T and new virtual operators, such as Maxom, Flash Mobile and Megatel, entering the market in the second half of 2016,” the market’s authority pointed out.
Broadband services finished 2016 slightly up, with the IFT reporting a 0.5% growth. This increase “is associated with the increasing broadband speeds delivered by the majority of operators,” it said.
