Leading Nordic pay-TV firm Modern Times Group (MTG) has further extended its sports portfolio by securing the exclusive regional media rights to the DKB Handball-Bundesliga for the next six seasons.

The deal will bring what MTG calls world-class handball action to fans in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden on TV, online and mobile platforms for the coming six seasons. The DKB Handball-Bundesliga is officially ranked Europe’s No 1 handball league by the European Handball Federation, and is contested by Germany’s top 18 teams and features many of the sport’s leading players.

MTG’s handball offering includes rights to DKB Handball-Bundesliga, EHF Cup, EHF Champions League, men’s and women’s 2020 EHF European Handball Championship, and women’s 2018 EHF European Handball Championship. Viasat TV channels and Viaplay streaming service will show up to three live matches from the DKB Handball-Bundesliga each week from the 2017/2018 season, which starts on 24 August 2017. Viasat and Viaplay will also show the three REWE Final Four matches in the DHB-Pokal along with the Pixum Super Cup and the annual HBL All-Star Game between the league’s top players and the German national handball team.

Commenting on the deal, Peter Nørrelund, MTG EVP and CEO of MTG Sport, said: “MTG is the undisputed leader in premium sports in the Nordic region and therefore the perfect home for the world’s best handball league. Extending these exclusive rights is great news for the super-passionate handball fans in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The DKB Handball-Bundesliga offers non-stop action – last season, each match produced an average of 54 goals – and we’re making it available on more screens than ever before.”
