High speed broadband set to finally take off in LATAM

Dataxis forecasts the number of ultra-broadband Latin American subscribers will increase from 36% to 75% over the next five years.

The high speed Internet services, based on growing fibre, high capacity cable and VDSL technologies, will bring new opportunities to over-the-top (OTT), premium quality video services as well as IPTV.

According to recent research from Dataxis, ultra-broadband subscribers will take an increasing share in total connections in Latin America in the coming years. Dataxis expects 25.6 million next-generation broadband connections by the end of this year, representing 36% of the total access.

This share will continue to grow and is forecast to reach 75% of connections in 2022 with a relatively balanced technological breakdown: 39% high speed cable, 31% fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and 30% VDSL.

Currently, the analyst defines ultra-broadband connections as accesses featuring a broad spectrum of speeds, starting from 20Mbps to 200Mbps and more, including FTTH, VDSL, VDSL2, VDSL2+, Docsis 3.0 and Docsis 3.1.

In general, Dataxis estimates that fixed broadband subscribers will reach 83.7 million by 2022, with a penetration rate in Latin America of 13.2%.
