After launching with great fanfare, rumours now abound that leading US communications provider Verizon is to pull the plug on its Go90 mobile-first video streaming service.
Tim Armstrong, CEO of Verizon’s Oath digital division, told audiences at Recode’s Code Media conference this week that Go90 is being folded into Oath. Meanwhile, its content will go from being exclusive to the Go90 platform to being made available across Verizon’s other digital properties, including Yahoo.
“We had two separate strategies now, now it will be one strategy,” he said. “We have taken Go90 into Oath.”
He added: “The brand will remain, [but] I don’t know how long for ... Go90 was a super ambitious project.”
Verizon launched Go90 in late 2015, targeting young viewers or millennials with about 100 to 200 hours of exclusive content from the National Football League, DreamWorks Animation's AwesomenessTV unit and Vice Media. It has steadily added content since then.
