As it aims to cash in on its almost impregnable market position, YouTube has added new content partners for the subscription TV element of its online video service, while raising its monthly fee to $40 in the US.

The online skinny TV service has added channels from Time Warner Inc’s Turner, the National Basketball League’s NBA TV and Major League Baseball’s MLB Network. Turner’s channels include TNT, CNN and TBS.

The price hike is significant – $5 more than before – but Google is expecting the strong sports additions (Turner channels bring various exclusive sports broadcast rights with them) will be an important differentiator.

“Sports is really one of the key offerings that a millennial would be willing to pay for a live TV service,” Heather Moosnick, director of content partnerships, YouTube TV, told Reuters.
