Star India has won the audiovisual production service rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic cricket from 2018-19, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced.
Full financial details have not been released by Indian cricket's governing body, but it is known that under the terms of the deal Star India will now be responsible for live production of all IPL matches, for which the 21st Century Fox-owned broadcaster has already bagged the media rights..
The IPL T20 cricket league is a major global event, last year attracting more than 335 million viewers around the world. Star India is now hoping to bolster that figure, having paid US$2.55 billion for IPL television and digital rights for five years to 2022.
"The service agreement and the contract term will cover one season of the IPL (2018) and one season of Domestic Cricket (2018-2019)," said Amitabh Choudhary, BCCI's acting secretary, in a statement on Monday 19 February.
"The BCCI, however, reserves the right to extend the term for one more Season of IPL (2019) and one more Season of Domestic Cricket (2019-2020) and at its discretion, further extend the term to include IPL Season 2020, as provided for in the Services Agreement," he added.
The new production rights award followed an earlier request for proposal documents by the BCCI.
