ICE details expansion plans in Central America

Costa Rica’s public telco ICE has confirmed its road map to extend telecom and pay-TV services across Central America.

In Nicaragua, the state-owned company has confirmed an agreement with Enatrel to launch TelcoTV, a pay-TV brand under the Telecomunica joint venture.

In Honduras, negotiations with the public telco Hondutel have also been confirmed, but ICE doesn’t plan to launch a pay-TV operation in the country, focusing instead on broadband and mobile.

The Costa Rican telco is also considering launching in El Salvador.

“As in Nicaragua, we intend to bring telecom services to El Salvador, and we’re also exploring the possibilities of entering business areas which are not covered by traditional operators,” said Jaime Palermo, director, corporate telecom, ICE.

The telco is also considering entering the Mexican market - where it claims it has already got a solid offer from a potential partner – as well as Panama and Guatemala. “We intend to reach the countries that are similar to Costa Rica, but without rejecting other regions, like the Caribbean,” added Parlemo.
