Spanish national public broadcaster RTVE seems to have finally corrected its deficit course, delivering €25 million profits in 2017.

Having chalked up its first balanced books in a decade last year, the corporation continued reducing expenses and increasing incomes, thus creating a €25 million surplus in 2017.

RTVE banked €980 million through the year, €3 million more than expected and still pending the so-called telco tax, through which the telecom companies support a public broadcaster with no ads incomes.

In addition, the corporation managed to reduce expenses by 2%, as 2016 saw an important technical deployment to cover the Olympics from Rio de Janeiro. RTVE has continued decreasing operational costs, which were of €280 million in 2009 and last year stood at €174 million.

The positive results have driven the board to renew some of the corporation's content agreements, such as the deal with Gestmusic Endemol for Operación Triunfo, the agreement with Shine Iberia for MasterChef Celebrity and MasterChef Junior.

RTVE has also green-lighted a new deal with Gestmusic Endemol to produce a local version of the BBC hit Dancing with the Stars.
