Gaurav Gandhi, the current COO of Viacom18’s over-the-top (OTT) platform VOOT, is set to head Amazon Prime Video in India, according to local reports.

Viacom18 has confirmed the resignation of Gandhi, after eight years with the media company. After joining in March 2010, he served first as chief commercial officer and head of international business, before becoming COO of distribution company IndiaCast. Since August 2015 Gandhi has overseen the development and launch of VOOT, as COO of Viacom18 Digital Venture.

The Economic Times reports Gandhi will now join Amazon Prime Video “in a couple of months” as director and country manager for India, replacing Nitesh Kripalani, who vacated the position in August 2017.

India is now Amazon Prime Video’s fastest growing market, with increased local content key to the streaming giant's strategy, Prime Video’s global vice president Tim Leslie recently told Reuters. Reflecting this, the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) operator reportedly plans to launch up to ten originals for India in 2018.

India’s increasingly competitive over-the-top (OTT) video sector is set to reach US$2 billion by 2022 up from $529 million in 2017, according to a recent report by Strategy Analytics.
