NBC News plans OTT launch to target younger viewers

The news division of US broadcasting giant NBC is planning to launch an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service this year, targeted at younger viewers who may not spend time watching linear TV.

The median age of viewers of NBC Nightly News is 64, according to Nielsen. The company has already looked to recapture younger viewers with a twice-daily digital news show called Stay Tuned, which it launched on Snapchat in July.

So far, it has five million subscribers, according to Nick Ascheim, head of digital at NBC News. He also said that he expects to 37 million to 38 million unique visitors this month, which is a significant improvement on the 33 million that the service saw in February.

The company said it hasn't yet decided whether it will be a subscription service or ad-supported.
