Spain’s three largest broadcasters are developing a shared HbbTV platform, which will be available to all DTT, free-to-air (FTA) operators.

The public broadcaster RTVE, Mediaset and Atresmedia have announced an unprecedent agreement to launch a hybrid TV platform to gather all the content they produce.

“The main goal is to boost content diversity, FTA quality and user experience through HbbTV services and features,” the broadcasters explained.

Once the HbbTV platform is up and running, the alliance will develop a similar over-the-top (OTT) platform to distribute the same kind of content through the Internet.

So far, there has been much experimentation around hybrid TV in Spain, but RTVE, along with other regional, public broadcasters, has been the only player to launch a fully operative HbbTV service, Botón Rojo.
