A year after launching its first eSports initiative, Telefónica has launched Movistar Riders Academy, targeting gaming talent in Spain.
Dante Cacciatore, director of communications, brand and customer experience at Telefónica España, provided the yearly figures of a project that has become one of the pillars of Movistar’s strategy.
Over the last 12 months, 145,000 people attended the events and tournaments organised by Movistar eSports and ESL, and more than 6,800 have registered in the different competitions organised by Movistar.
On the TV side of the eSports project, the telco claimed to have produced 10 programmes for the Movistar+ Movistar eSports Channel.
In addition, 2.7 million followers, 185 million hits, 15 million visualisations of content, and 250,000 pages visited each month were reached across Movistar eSports’ digital properties.
For 2018, the company has launched Movistar Riders Academy, aiming to discover and promote eSports talent in Spain, to facilitate the training, and to transform Movistar into the largest generator of Spanish-speaking eSports content.
“Telefónica wants to take a step forward promoting the development of eSports among fans, and for this purpose we have the best tool: connectivity, the foundation of the digital revolution,” said Cacciatore.
