Amazon Prime Video is now streaming recent Bollywood blockbuster Padmaavat, following a deal with producers Sanjay Leela Bhansali Films and Viacom18 Motion Pictures.
The period drama, which had its theatrical release in January 2018, is set in 1303 AD medieval India and tells the story of Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Khilji dynasty, and his obsessive love for the queen of Mewar, Rani Padmini.
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapur, supported by Sanjay Dutt, Jim Sarbh, Sonu Sood and Aditi Rao Hydari.
“Our promise to offer the latest, exclusive and the most awaited content to our customers is truly exemplified with bringing Padmaavat to Prime Video, exclusively for our customers,” said Vijay Subramaniam, director, content, Amazon Prime Video India.
“Padmaavat has been one of the biggest releases of the year and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand vision came to life through stellar on-screen performances by some of the best talent in Bollywood. We are proud and excited to associate with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom18 Motion Pictures for the worldwide digital premiere of Padmaavat exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.”
India is now the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service’s fastest growing market, with increased local content key to it’s strategy, according to Amazon Prime Video’s global vice president Tim Leslie.
In addition to a growing array of local acquisitions, the SVOD operator reportedly plans to launch up to ten originals for India in 2018. Among them is an unscripted show, Comicstan, along with dramas Made in Heaven, Mirzapur and 4 More Shots.
