Aiming to cut the wait for video playback online video technology, Bitmovin has unveiled Player v8, designed to allow service providers to select the exact functionality they need for their networks and content.
Bitmovin says that its modular player was developed to get consumers to the content they want as fast as possible, especially in low bandwidth networks. The company claims that with its new technology, customised player can be up to 75% smaller than a fully loaded player with all possible modules, reducing the typical time load time on a HTML page by up to one full second. It adds that using the player can improve an overall user experience and therefore reduce churn which for ad-supported services could potentially maximise views and boost revenue.
Based on HTML5, Bitmovin's modular player can run on platforms such as smart TVs to set-top boxes, games consoles, smartphones and desktop. It supports any video content, including high dynamic range (HDR) and 8K. Developers can select from a range of modules including ad insertion, digital rights management (DRM), Chromecast and Flash support.
"Consumers have a need for speed, they expect to get to the content they want in a heartbeat," said Bitmovin CEO and co-founder Stefan Lederer. "Taking a fully modular approach means that developers can create a player that matches their exact needs in the smallest possible file size."
