In addition to 4K broadcasting, DIRECTV Latin America is to offer virtual reality (VR) features during its FIFA World Cup coverage.

Subscribers in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will be able to access the VR features in all 64 games of the World Cup in Russia.

Through their smartphones, the DIRECTV Sports VR app for iOS and Android, and a virtual reality headset, users will be able to watch the action inside the stadium, change between TV cameras, re-watch the games and interact with data and statistics.

Live experiences will be only available as a 180° view, while the fully-immersive, 360° video will be available on-demand once the game is over.

“DIRECTV has been using FIFA World Cup as a platform to launch the most advanced TV technology, aiming to improve fans’ experience and the standards of the broadcasting industry,” said José Miguel Vera, senior manager, digital products, DIRECTV Latin America. “Virtual Reality adds on more layers of detail and interaction to the World Cup coverage.”
