A new survey from Digital TV Research has found that Europe is set to have 262 million TV subscriptions by the end of 2018, up from 205 million three years ago.
Not surprisingly, Western Europe will be the epicentre of this growth and similarly, subscription video-on-demand will be a growth engine with SVOD subscriptions amounting to 76 million, tripling between 2015 and 2018. SVOD’s share of the total is set to climb from 13% to 29% between 2015 and 2018 but traditional pay-TV is set for much more modest growth, adding only add 8 million subscribers to a total of 186 million.
In terms of business generated, the SVOD and advertising VOD arenas are set to accrue $14 billion, up from $6 billion in 2015. The Digital TV Research report concludes by predicting that with pay-TV revenues flat at $36 billion, total revenues will reach $50 billion in 2018, up by $7.7 billion compared with 2015.
