Deepa Mehta to direct Netflix series Leila

Netflix’s upcoming dystopian drama Leila is to be directed by Deepa Mehta, who will also be creative executive producer for the streaming giant’s upcoming Indian original series.
Based on the Prayaag Akbar novel of the same name, the series will see directors Shankar Raman (Gurgaon) and Pawan Kumar (Lucia) join Mehta (pictured), who is best known for her trilogy Fire, Earth and Water and for the film adaptation of Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie.
Bollywood screenwriter Umrmi Juvekar (Oye Lucky! Lucky! Lucky Oye! and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy) will be the showrunner.
Revolving around a mother’s search for her lost daughter, and filmed in New Delhi, Leila’s cast includes Huma Qureshi and Siddharth Suryanarayan.
The six-episode drama will stream on Netflix globally in 2019.
Leila is one of an increasing slate of Indian originals in production for Netflix, as the company prepares for the launch of its latest local title: the Indian family drama Rajma Chawal, which premieres on 30 Novemb
