Kakao M appoints Kim Sung-soo as CEO

South Korean entertainment company Kakao M has appointed former CJ ENM CEO Kim Sung-soo to lead its plans to expand into original video content production.
The entertainment arm of internet company Kakao Corp will now focus on creating short form content aimed at viewers in their teens or twenties, according to The Korea Times.
“Kakao M has its strengths in the music and video content business and is full of potential. My job is to foster the firm as a strong player in the global market,” said Kim.
The media executive was considered key to helping CJ ENM become a leading entertainment company through investment in content production. Popular CJ ENM dramas such as the Reply series and Misaeng, and reality TV shows Grandpas Over Flowers and Three Meals a Day were made during his tenure.
Following Kim’s appointment, Kakao M said it would now “strengthen investment and support in producing various genres of original content” in addition to the web dramas and entertainment shows currently made by its two year old mobile video production company Krispy Studio
The originals produced will be streamed on Kakao’s digital content platform Kakao Page, which is optimised for mobile devices.
Established in 1978, Kakao M also operates as a record label, talent agency, music production company, event management, concert production company and music publishing house.
