India’s broadband subscriptions near 512MN

India’s broadband universe has expanded to 511.9 million, a rise of 3.18% from October 2018, according to subscription data from 306 operators.

India has witnessed an explosive growth in data consumption over the past few years, with an increase in smartphone penetration, cheaper data packages, and heightened demand for video content. In its third quarter results last week, leading broadband provider Reliance Jio said its customers’ average data consumption per month stood at 10.8GB, with video driving most of the usage at 4600 million hours per month.

As of the end of November 2018, the top five broadband service providers held a 98.56% market share of the country’s total broadband connections. Leading the pack was Reliance Jio with 271.55 million subscribers, followed by Vodafone Idea with 105.44 million, then Bharti Airtel with 104.74 million, BSNL with 20.45 million, and Tata Tele Group with 2.32 million.

The top five fixed line broadband service providers were BSNL with 9.17 million subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 2.26 million, Atria Convergence Technologies with 1.38 million, MTNL with 0.78 million, and Hathway Cable & Datacom with 0.77 million.

The top five mobile broadband service providers were Reliance Jio with 271.55 million subscribers, Vodafone Idea with 105.43 million, Bharti Airtel with 102.49 million, BSNL with 11.29 million, and Tata Teleservices with 1.84 million.
