Indian over-the-top (OTT) platform MX Player is to launch an original series with millennial protagonists called Hey Prabhu on 20 February.
Shashanka Ghosh directed the show for the Times Internet-owned platform. It stars Rajat Barmecha, Achint Kaur, Sheeba Chaddha, Ritu Raj Singh, Parul Gulati and Prynca Talukdar.
The life of fashionable Tarun (played by Rajat Barmecha) is an open book; chapter and verse on the internet. He likes women but runs away from commitment, and he craves attention. So what happens when he confronts the ‘offline’ troubles of his first job, moving out of his parent’s home and a case of erectile dysfunction?
“Hey Prabhu is a lighthearted take on the psyche of the millennials and what keeps them ticking on a daily basis. In a world that’s largely virtual, the series talks about real-life problems that this breed of youngsters battle – be it on the home front or at work. With comedy as a backdrop – the show highlights the complexity of both, the little as well as the big problems,” said director Shashanka Ghosh.
Rajat Barmecha said, “Tarun is the antithesis of the quintessential Sharma ji ka ladka. On the work front, he excels with the understanding of social media and delivers above expectation but on the personal front, he doesn’t seem able to deal with the mess his life is in. He is a millennial who has issues that many may deem unnecessary but are very real to him.
“I hope the audiences enjoy the series as much as we enjoyed making it.”
It is one of a raft of original shows on MX Player promised this year by the digital arm of media conglomerate Times Group.
Times Internet bought a majority stake in MX Player for over INR 10 billion (US$145.77 million) in 2018 to return to India’s video streaming market. It closed down its four-year old streaming platform, Box TV, in 2016.
