Online video technology Bitmovin has won a contract with the BBC to enhance its content preparation and maximise quality for selected live and Ultra HD (UHD) content on catch-up TV and video-on-demand (VOD) services.
A Bitmovin encoder solution, based on parallel processing, is seeing use making the British public broadcaster’s live shows available rapidly on satellite provider set-top boxes (STBs) so flagship programmes can be seen soon after the time of broadcast.
Content can be made available in the required format shortly after the live broadcast or episodic TV series release from post-production, and then delivered to consumers using a public cloud-based platform. The solution is also being used in UHD and high dynamic range (HDR) trials such as those including the programme Dynasties on the broadcaster’s on-demand service, which was available via hundreds of smart TVs and cable provider set-top boxes.
“Every asset the BBC produces needs to be delivered at the best possible quality, including for catch-up and new release VOD services,” explained Bitmovin CEO Stefan Lederer. “We are proud our encoding solution enables their viewers to access their favourite programs in a timely manner, leveraging our cloud-native, massively distributed encoding technology which achieves greater encoding speeds without compromising video quality.”
