Winter may be coming but so are smash viewing figures for Game of Thrones as HBO reported a ratings record with the season eight premiere on 14 April.

The 17.4 million people who watched the season eight premiere 14 April outstripped the 16.9 million who watched the season seven finale and the 16.1 million who tuned in for the season seven premiere.

On the streaming front, HBO Now saw a spike of approximately 50% in viewing when compared with last season’s finale, and it nearly doubled (97%) when compared to the seventh season premiere.

Based on the novel series by George R. R. Martin, the HBO show was created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The cast includes Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and Emilia Clarke.
