The Smithsonian Channel has begun operation in Brazil with its linear and VOD services available in HD on NET, the country’s leading television distributor and the largest cable television operator in Latin America.

Smithsonian Channel is owned by Smithsonian Networks, a joint venture between Showtime Networks Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution. Inspired by the world-famous Smithsonian Institution – the world's largest museum and research complex – and combined with the storytelling from SHOWTIME and CBS, Smithsonian Channel programming spans a wide range of non-fiction topics, including history, travel, air and space, science, nature and pop culture. It has already won an Emmy award for non-fiction programming.

Upcoming series and documentaries to air on Smithsonian Channel in Brazil will include Million Dollar American Princesses; America’s Secret Space Heroes; Mummies Alive; Epic Yellowstone. For the launch, Smithsonian Channel has partnered with media company Grupo Bandeirantes de Comunicacao on the launch in Brazil. Grupo Bandeirantes de Comunicacao will handle operations management, scheduling, ad sales, affiliate sales and marketing advisory.

“Smithsonian Channel has been embraced internationally by non-fiction entertainment lovers at an increasing pace that surprises even us,” said Tom Hayden, President of Smithsonian Networks. “After rolling out in Latin America last year and the UK and Ireland this past February, we’re excited to enter into the massively important media market of Brazil and are already commissioning new programming that draws on Brazilian talent.”
