New York-based production company MY Entertainment (MYE) has acquired new format Dancefloor Date from Newen Distribution.
Stalwart producer, director and former dancer Nigel Lythgoe has now signed as showrunner and executive producer for the double-blind dating competition show which combines two evergreen genres — talent and dating — and is based on the premise that, by helping people to get closer to each, dancing can be the prelude to falling in love.
Singletons take it in turns to dance behind a screen, where only their moving silhouette can be seen by their potential partner. Based on their moves and good old-fashioned chemistry, contestants are eliminated until only one is left — whereupon it’s time see whether the attraction is as strong off the dance floor as it is on it.
Commenting on the show, Lythgoe (pictured), whose credits include Fox hit So You Think You Can Dance and super-formats Pop Idol and American Idol, said: “In Dancefloor Date, we don’t just let them go off on a dancing date alone, we film every aspect of the date and their private emotions and invite them back to view the footage and their off the cuff remarks and participate in an honest discussion. That’s where my favourite part of the format begins. Did they dance beautifully around the floor like Fred and Ginger or did they tread on each other’s toes. The brutal truth comes out about a date of desire or disaster.”
MY Entertainment founder and CEO Michael Yudin added: “This project continues our efforts in expanding our ongoing international strategy...we wouldn’t invest our time and expertise in something that wasn’t extremely special. Dancefloor Date certainly ticks that box — as does Nigel. His expertise, experience and track record in talent and dating shows is unequalled, and he also has an almost sixth sense of what will sell internationally.”
