In what the company says is a clear reflection of the huge momentum in the shift to streaming and away from linear TV and legacy distribution platforms, Roku has reported significant revenue rises in its first quarter of 2019.
With its growth in the quarter ended 31 March 2019, the company estimated that in Q1 2019 more than a third smart TVs sold in the US were Roku TVs, making the Roku OS the leading selling smart TV OS in the country.
For the quarter, Roku posted total net revenue of $206.7 million, up 51% year-on-year, with platform revenue increasing 79% annually to $134.2 million. Gross profit for the quarter was $100.9 million, a 60% increase on a yearly basis.
Roku also calculated that streaming hours on its platforms increased 1.6 billion hours compared with the fourth quarter of 2018 to 8.9 billion. The company monetised this activity to the extent that average revenue per user (ARPU) was $19.06 on a TTM basis, up $1.11 vs. Q4, and up 27% year-on-year and the company’s monetised video ad impressions again more than doubled annually in the quarter.
