India’s public broadcast network Doordarshan (DD) is partnering with Google to live stream the general election and state assembly election results on YouTube on 23 May.

DD News, which broadcasts in English and Hindi, will be available on YouTube. In addiiton, 14 other regional DD channels will be offered on YouTube.

It is the first time the video streaming platform’s parent company Google and DD’s operator Prasar Bharati have worked together.

“What is going to happen is whenever anybody accesses YouTube from anywhere in India either through the website of YouTube or through the YouTube App, the first thing that they will see on top will be a news stream from DD News updating the results,” Prasar Bharati Shashi Shekhar Vempati told PTI.

“It will be a sort of a landing screen. Once you click on that it will be a live YouTube channel of DD News . Apart from that, the window will also have the option of live stream of 14 other DD regional stations of different languages,” he added.

The move makes the public broadcaster’s tally more visible across platforms in a country where election coverage can be marred by rumour and conjecture.

“It is a significant measure in terms of bringing election results digitally, in different languages and ensuring that the source is the most authentic in India,” said Vempati.
