MultiChoice’s streaming platform Showmax will be adding all Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football matches featuring the South African national team to its newly launched sports programming.

Affectionately known as Bafana Bafana, South Africa will start their AFCON campaign in Group D with Morocco, Ivory Coast and Namibia. Their first match, against Ivory Coast, will be on 26 June at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.

Showmax will live stream the matches, following the debut of its sports offer with South Africa’s games in the ICC Cricket World Cup.

The new sport section, which includes a range of extended highlights from major sports events, popular magazine shows, and live-streaming, is available on all Showmax apps and platforms except for Apple TV, Xbox and PlayStation, and some smart TVs. The company said it plans to offer support for these in the coming months.

The price of Showmax, which until now showed only entertainment on-demand, remains unchanged at ZAR99 per month, or ZAR49 per month for DStv Compact and Compact Plus subscribers. It is free to subscribers of the DStv Premium pack.

“We’re going to trial a bunch of different sport content while keeping Showmax at the R99 price point, and see how our customers interact with the service. We’ll be ramping up our live game offerings with everything from selected matches from the best football leagues in Europe to streaming a wide variety of varsity and school sports,” said Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of the Connected Video division, MultiChoice, when the service launched earlier this month.

The live sports content on Showmax is currently only available in South Africa.
