Marking vindication of its 2018 expansion into Latin America, the Smithsonian Channel has been nominated for two news and documentary Emmy Awards for its Ultra HD series The Wild Andes.
The three-part series premiered in Latin America in March 2019 and will be broadcast again on 17 August from 19:00–22:00 and captures the diversity of life and landscape found in the Andes Mountains, venturing to seldom explored locations in search of some of the world’s rarest creatures. It is also said to captures animal behaviours that have never been seen before with ‘soaring’ aerials, ‘stunning’ time-lapses and super slow-motion cinematography, bringing the little-known world of the more than 4,000 mile-long mountain range directly into viewers’ homes.
The Wild Andes is produced by Light & Shadow for Smithsonian Networks and WDR in association with NDR Naturfilm, Arte, ORF, SRF and SVT. Christian Baumeister serves as producer and director for Light & Shadow. Gabriele Conze serves as executive producer for WDR. Tria Thalman and David Royle serve as executive producers for Smithsonian Channel.
Emmy nominations included Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Sound and Music. Nominees for the former category include Baumeister and directors of photography Christian Muñoz-Donoso and Christiaan Muñoz-Salas. For Outstanding Music and Sound, Kathleen Brenner, Carmen López Carreno and Alexander Weuffen have been nominated.
