Live and on-demand sport streaming service DAZN has landed the exclusive rights to this year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup in two markets – Japan and Canada — while securing non-exclusive rights to the tournament in Spain.

Hosted by China for the first time, the 18th edition of the World Cup will be played in eight cities across five provinces. Over 16 days there will be 92 games of basketball, with 32 teams competing for the first time in the history of the tournament. The tournament begins on 31 August with Angola and Serbia tipping off proceedings in Foshan and will conclude in Beijing on 15 September.

The sport’s governing body FIBA and DAZN Group created in 2016 a joint venture, FIBA Media, to oversee the management of sports rights as well as live TV production, broadcast services, data and editorial distribution of FIBA’s basketball events all around the world. The 17-year joint venture (2017-2033) covers major FIBA tournaments including Olympic qualifying tournaments as well as the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Commenting on the deal, Laura Louisy, VP rights acquisition at DAZN Group, said: “This year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the best yet, and DAZN is thrilled to bring such an exciting tournament to basketball fans across three markets. Having the rights in Japan, Canada and Spain maintains our focus to bring about a fairer and better way to watch the best sport, anytime, on any device.”
