Southeast Asian streaming service iflix is to release the movie Rise to Power, the next part of the KL Gangster Underworld franchise, on 19 September.

The film, which will be streamed by iflix without charge, sees Dynas Mokhtar reprise her role as Madam Wong, chronicling her struggles as she becomes the first woman to lead a Kuala Lumpur gang.

“When we looked at the feedback from fans who made KL Gangster Underworld Season 1 one of our most successful series, we realised they were particularly intrigued by the character of Madam Wong and the nature of her relationship with Ayah Zan,” said Mark Francis, iflix's global director of original programming.

“We were in the planning stages for Season 2 when Dynas became pregnant, and it occurred to us that we could pre-empt the second season with a story set 10 years before the events of season one, thereby ‘resurrecting’ Zan.”

“This movie is really unique for its strong and ruthless female lead, whilst serving up the level of fight action and plot intrigue that is making the KL Gangster Underworld franchise a true fan favourite,” he added.

Rise to Power reunites film-makers from Skop Productions (Munafik 2, Abang Long Fadil 2, Evolusi KL Drift 2, and KL Gangster), with directors Faisal Ishak and Syafiq Yusof, who helmed KL Gangster Underworld Season 1.

The film will feature previous characters Ayah Zan (Hasnul Rahmat), Tauke (Azhan Rani), Shah (Beto Kusyairy), Adi (Zahiril Adzim), and Belut (Amerul Affendi), alongside the ‘king’ from 2001’s KL Gangster movie, played by Ridzuan Hashim.

Fans can catch the complete franchise; KL Gangster, KL Gangster 2, and KL Gangster Underworld Season 1 for free on iflix, ahead of the launch of Rise to Power.

Season 2 of KL Gangster Underworld, which begins shooting in November, is slated for release by iflix in 2020.
