Leading Australian factual programming producer WildBear Entertainment is now in production on three new science and engineering series after completing a pre-sales package with N-TV in Germany.

Cologne-based N-TV is part of the Media Group RTL Germany and in primetime mainly broadcasts documentaries to complement core news programming.

The 17-hour deal builds on WildBear Entertainment’s expertise in creating titles about major feats of engineering. The first series to be greenlit is 8 x 60’ How to Build a City with each episode focusing on a major city, such as Tokyo, Berlin or Sydney, and then exploring the engineering ingenuity that makes a specific location work. Each episode mixes footage from the past and present and includes interviews with experts. It shows how city populations maintain access to the basic necessities of life and how climate change and increasing or decreasing populations, are taking their toll.

How Factories Changed the World (5 x 60’) examines how mass production gives the power to create, build, destroy and consume as never before, shaping every aspect of our lives. From heavy industry and making machines for war to the factories that produce the everyday food, clothing and goods, the impact of factories on our landscape, cities and culture is explored. The final episode looks at cutting-edge tech and new manufacturing science and asks, where will factories take us in the future, and what will they look like.

The final series is Future Warfare (4 x 60’). The title looks at the evolution of war by taking us beyond the traditional idea of ‘battlefield’ and into the unchartered reaches of outer space and the digital realm, as the line between reality and science fiction is blurred by extraordinary developments in technology.

How to Build a City and Future Warfare will be distributed by Passion Distribution, while Red Arrow International has acquired the rights for How Factories Changed the World.

Commenting on the deals, N-TV’s Gabi Nensel said: “We are delighted that our support has helped greenlight these fascinating series and we look forward to them delivering later in the year. WildBear has a well-deserved reputation for producing impactful science and engineering series and these three titles, with their brilliant access, leading experts, and entertaining narratives, are sure to be ratings-winners with our viewers.”

WildBear Entertainment CEO Michael Tear added: “N-TV has long supported WildBear Entertainment by acquiring our content so we are delighted to extend the relationship through this early investment in these three new series. N-TV’s interest in our science and engineering capabilities reflects a broader demand for this type of content, and we look forward to seeing these titles travel around the world with our international distribution partners.”
