From fleabag to money bags, the week gets better for Phoebe Waller-Bridge who hot on the heels of scooping major prizes at the Emmys has just clinched a huge content deal with Amazon Prime Video.
At the awards ceremony, the leading UK writer and actor won best lead actress in a comedy series and best writing for a comedy series for Fleabag which was also named best comedy series. Fleabag offers a window into the mind of a dry-witted, sexual, angry, grief-riddled woman, Waller-Bridge, as she hurls herself at modern living in London, trying to come to terms with a recent tragedy. It is a Two Brothers Pictures production in association with DryWrite for the BBC. The show also premiered in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries exclusively for members.
Waller-Bridge was also an executive producer on the second season of cult hit comedy drama Killing Eve whose Jodie Comer won best lead actress in a drama series. She was also writer and showrunner for the first season.
Now, according to Variety magazine, Waller-Bridge has signed with Amazon in a deal worth said to be worth around $20 million a year. “I’m insanely excited to be continuing my relationship with Amazon,” Variety quoted Waller-Bridge as saying . “Working with the team on Fleabag was the creative partnership dreams are made of. It really feels like home. I can’t wait to get going!”
“We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Phoebe at Amazon Studios,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios in a statement. “As evident in her great success at the Emmy Awards this week, she is clever, brilliant, generous and a virtuoso on multiple fronts including writing, acting and producing. Fleabag has been a gift to our Prime Video customers and we are excited for what comes next from this brilliant mind to dazzle and delight our global audience.”
