Telco strategies for the future

It will be important for telcos to generate their own content in the future, according to Filip Remskar, CEO Beenius.
Speaking in a key note at the Beenius Summit 2019 in Ljubljana, he added that they should also look at IoT and like Croatia’s Iskon, one of Beenius’s clients, to develop their own platform.
It should also be borne in mind that each VOD asset will in the future have 5,000 data points, compared to the current 5-50, and that screens will change.
User generated content will also become a prime assets and there will also be 5G – OTT to consider.
In a wide-ranging presentation, Remskar cited data provided by A1 Telekom Austria that showed the company provided just over half (20,999,600) of the NATCO population of 40,699,000 with mobile services, its TV RGU total was only 1,646,900, equivalent to only 0.31% of the population and 0.72% of the households served.
He also said that Telekom Austria has 90,000 hours of assets on its 500 channels available at any moment, compared to the 24,000 offered by Netflix in Europe.
In one of its recommendations to the telco, Beenius suggested it should make all its content from NATCOS available in other countries.
Indeed, for its part Beenius is developing geoblocking that will allow OTT operators going into other markets to black out individual shows for which operators do not have the rights but still make their service international.
Summarising its propositions, Remskar said they include one data for all; a recommendation engine for all TV devices; and treating all content as a video asset and making all regional content available to all.
