Freeview has announced that it is to introduce on its Channelbox platform Rudaw, said to be the largest Kurdish news network delivering news from Iraqi Kurdistan and the Middle East.
The reasons for the launch are clear: there are over 250,000 Kurds living in the UK, making it one of the largest diasporas in the country. The launch makes Rudaw the first Kurdish language TV channel ever-launched in the UK.
Multi-channel over-the-top TV service Channelbox bundles a curated selection of free-to-air TV channels, delivered to Freeview via the public Internet. The service caters for native language news-hungry international communities living in the UK offering to date services in French and Greek. The current Channelbox line-up includes France24, Hellenic TV, Retro Movies and Law & Crime. More channels will be announced in January 2020.
“We are thrilled to deliver the news to the Kurdish diaspora living in the UK in their own language and will continue to expand the portfolio of TV channels to cater for every community who made the UK their home”, said Channelbox’s Tanya Kronfli commenting on the launch of Rudaw.
“This is a new step by Rudaw Media Network to impart news and information in an easy manner to the Kurdish diaspora in Britain. On the occasion of this service of ours and the New Year nearing, we congratulate the Kurdish people of Britain,” added Hejar Berenji of Rudaw Media Network.
