Edge cloud services provider Limelight Networks has revealed that it has had to increase its network egress capacity more than 70% in the last year to support the growth of online traffic and the needs of customers worldwide.

Stressing that it has added this global capacity in an environmentally sensitive manner, and claiming to have set a new standard for more energy efficient content delivery solutions, the company has added new content delivery capabilities in service provider networks in 19 locations across eight countries — namely Thailand, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Australia, Turkey and Malaysia — increasing egress capacity to over 70 terabits per second with 130 points-of-presence (PoPs) across the globe.

In addition to efficiency gains, Limelight says that it saw online traffic increase by almost 50% in the last year. The company attributed the demand to involvement in several live and on-demand OTT launches by global media companies for whom Limelight is a partner.

Limelight added that over the last year, the efficiency of its network has consistently improved through the use of software innovation and new server technology. The next-generation servers are said to be able to increase the average amount of data delivered per unit of power (megabits per second per watt) by almost 80% ,providing increased capacity and reliability.

“We’re delivering record online traffic and performance levels while expanding in an environmentally responsible way,” remarked Limelight , vice president of strategic initiatives Ersin Galioglu. “With many major media companies launching OTT offerings, we’re adding capacity globally as efficiently as possible to meet the growing demand.”
