Just as expected, the Disney+ direct-to-consumer streaming service has made a huge impact already in the first few days of launch since 24 March in the UK,
Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland.

According to research from AppAnnie analysing the number of downloads of the Disney+ mobile app in the European territories, the DTC app generated about 5 million downloads across the seven new markets.

The mobile analyst said that with many Europeans on lockdown at home, often with children looking to be entertained, this launch comes at a time when people are even more inclined to stream content. The analyst added that it believed that the service was set to be one of the top streaming apps in the region.

Disney+ includes original titles including The Mandalorian, the epic first-ever live-action Star Wars series; Lady and the Tramp, a live-action re-telling of the 1955 animated classic; High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the all-new scripted series set at the real-life East High featured in the hit movies; The World According to Jeff Goldblum docu-series from National Geographic; Marvel’s Hero Project; Encore!, executive produced by the multi-talented Kristen Bell; The Imagineering Story a six-part documentary; animated short film collections SparkShorts and Forky Asks A Question from Pixar Animation Studios.

In addition to being available for a number of leading service providers across the region, such as Sky in the UK, Disney+ is on offer from mobile providers such as O2 in the UK, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, Telefónica in Spain and TIM in Italy.

Looking at further growth prospects for the service which smashed all records after its US launch, indeed beyond the company's greatest expectations said Disney, AppAnnie added that France will be coming onstream in April and more Western European markets in the summer of 2020 followed by Latin-America. It anticipated another mobile downstream surge when the service became available in the Asia-Pacific region which it noted included some of the world’s largest mobile first markets for streaming video.

Disney launches with 5 million downloads on Day 1
    March 26, 2020 11.39 Europe/London By Julian Clover
The launch of Disney+ in seven European territories Wednesday generated 5 million downloads.
The streaming service made its debut at a time when many Europeans are on lockdown at home as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak.
According to App Annie, Germany topped the list of streamers, followed by the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy. The data analyst believes Disney is on course to be one of the most popular services in the region.
As part of its launch offer, Disney has released Frozen 2 on the service two months ahead of schedule.
It will launch in France in a fortnight, two weeks later than planned after the intervention of the French government.
Disney+ is the 7th ranked non-gaming app by consumer spend worldwide, which App Annie is impressive given that the performance was based predominantly on the US alone. It’s anticipated the European launch will see the service move further up the ranks.
In December 2019, Disney+ users spent an average of 3 hours and 10 minutes per month in the app. This is comparable to established players like Netflix (4 hours and 20 minutes per month), and Hulu (3 hours and 20 minutes per month).
If Disney’s European uptake reflects that of the United States it would be one of the largest streaming services in each country where it launches.
