A study from Digital TV Research is projecting that while its digital market will show growth, Eastern Europe’s overall pay-TV arena will suffer from subscriber losses from now until 2025.
The study found that while Eastern Europe will add nearly 10 million digital pay-TV subscribers between 2019 and 2025 to take its total to 77 million, the total universe will see a five million customer decline from its 2018 peak year to 83 million. The region had 15.4 million analogue cable subscribers by end-2019.
Digital TV Research partially attributes the projected losses to migration from the region in addition to low birth rates that will likely mean that populations will fall in 14 of the 22 countries that the company will cover between 2019 and 2025. The end result said the company will be that the number of TV households will fall in 16 countries between 2019 and 2025 – with the region’s TV households dropping by 2.2 million over this period.
The Eastern Europe Pay TV Forecasts report also projected that the number of pay-TV subscribers will fall in six countries between 2019 and 2025. Even though Russia is set to account for half of the region’s pay-TV subscribers in 2025, it will likely lose 2.91 million pay-TV subs between 2019 and 2025.
