Iliad bids for UPC Polska

Liberty Global has revealed it recently received a non-binding offer from Iliad to buy 100% of its Polish operation UPC Polska for PL7.3 billion (€1.6 billion).

In a statement in its latest set of results, it added: “Discussions are in process and there can be no certainty that a transaction will ultimately be consummated. If any agreement were to be reached, customary terms and conditions would apply to any proposed transaction, including regulatory approvals. We will update the market in due course on the outcome of these discussions”.

Broadband TV News notes that UPC Polska is only one of Liberty Global’s two remaining operations in Central and Eastern Europe – the other being UPC Slovakia – following the sale of its assets in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania to Vodafone.

France’s Iliad already has a presence in the Polish market following its acquisition of Play Communications, the country’s leading mobile operator.

UPC Polska was Poland’s leading cable operator in subscriber number terms until it was overtaken by Vectra following its acquisition of Multimedia Polska.

UPC Polska had a total of 1,535,400 customers receiving its services as of June 30 this year.
