Google to improve TV experience

Google has given details of improvements to Google TV designed to improve the performance of the two-year old system.

In a blog post on Google TV’s Community pages, S Ward details some of the improvements made in recent months and others that are currently in the pipeline.

A series of CPU optimisations and improvements to cache management have helped reduce the time it takes for the Google TV home screen to load. There is also improved scrolling within tabs and an overall improvement to the responsiveness. The Live tab also now loads quicker.

The improvements have been made possible by reducing the amount of RAM taken up by Google TV.

In Kids profiles, image caching optimisations have been able to reduce the time it takes to switch between profiles. The latency between loading a kid’s profile to starting an app has also been removed.

With 10,000 apps available on Google TV, storage has become an issue with some users quickly reaching their storage limits. A new Free up storage menu in Settings now allows users to easily clear the cache and uninstall apps that are not being used.

There have also been changes to the way Google TV handles app installations so that fewer users see storage-related errors when trying to install a new app. An automated process also frees up space in the background.
