Spaceport America Gets Its Tax
Backers of Spaceport America won a big one yesterday as Sierra County, N.M., came out in favor of a quarter-cent gross receipts sales tax to help fund the project.
Neighboring Dona Ana County agreed to the tax by a slim 1.6 percent margin last spring but Sierra County tallied two-thirds of all voters in favor.
The vote was critical as a tax district to fund construction of Spaceport America, which is seen as a center for future space tourism and commercial ventures. The effort needs the approval of at least two counties. The upshot: New Mexico tax authorities can start to collect a 25 cent charge on each $100 purchase and Spaceport America is one step closer to reality.
