1 Ampere Analysis says MIPCOM confirmed new D2C vs licensing
Ampere Analysis has given its verdict on MIPCOM 2023, highlighting pre-pandemic scale, market buzz, and an understanding among content companies that a mixed approach to licensing, windowing and D2C streaming is needed to fully realise the value of content.
‘The Amp: MIPCOM 2023 special’ says it was clear at MIPTV in April that major content owners “had been hit with the realisation that going all-in on direct [to-consumer] may not be the best way to fully realise the value of content in an increasingly saturated and competitive market for streaming.” At MIPCOM, executives were focused on executing on a strategy that Ampere Analysis characterises as ‘looking back to move forward’.
The analyst firm quotes major content executives extolling the virtues of licensing and the use of different windows, and concludes that Netflix is now the only major content or streaming player “that is not (re)-embracing windowing and licensing as core to its monetisation strategy.”
Ampere Analysis reports on increasing discussions about the possibility that FAST is over-hyped, and a “broad industry consensus during the market that consolidation among global streamers and content majors is coming.” The company reports that local content is still a central drive for the U.S. studios.
