JANUARY 15, 2024 13.14 EUROPE/LONDON BY JULIAN CLOVER
Dutch telco KPN has reached agreement to take over Coöperatie Glasvezel Noord (CGN) following the approval of the cooperative’s member council.
The network consists of approximately 3,700 homes in the north of Drenthe.
CGN Alie Hut said: “Since 2013, volunteers from the cooperative have worked extremely hard to get the network built. The takeover by KPN is now a logical next step, which ensures that our members can also enjoy fast internet in the future.”
Joost Steltenpool, director of KPN Network added: “KPN is rapidly modernising its existing copper networks by replacing them with fibre optic networks. This allows it to provide its customers with super-fast internet and keep the Netherlands ahead digitally. Where possible we do this with others.”
A statement from KPN stressed that CGN remained an open network, accessible to various telecom providers and providers, with no change for subscribers. KPN will also start offering services on the network in 2024.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
