Pay-TV and paid-VOD revenues grow to €5.4bn in Germany

The market for pay-TV and paid video content in Germany continues to develop positively.
Revenues for pay-TV and paid video-on-demand in Germany grew by 8.8% to €5.4 billion in 2023. For the current year 2024, German commercial broadcaster association VAUNET expects a further increase in total revenue of around 5% to €5.6 billion.
The DACH region – Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland – also remains on growth course: in 2023, total revenues in the German-speaking countries rose to €6.3 billion, exceeding the €6 billion threshold for the first time. For 2024, VAUNET expects further growth of around 5% to a total of €6.7 billion in the DACH region, excluding possible external negative influences.
These are the key findings of the study Pay-TV & Paid VOD in Germany 2023/2024, which the association presented in Berlin today. It documents the market development in 2023 as well as VAUNET’s market expectations for the current year 2024.
According to the report, the number of pay-TV subscriptions in Germany rose to 11.2 million in 2023 (2022: 10.1 million), while AGF-licensed pay-TV channels achieved an average monthly reach of 18.7 million viewers. For 2024, VAUNET expects a new high of 11.6 million pay-TV subscriptions in Germany.
The number of SVOD subscribers in Germany rose to 21.1 million in 2023, breaking through the 20 million mark for the first time. According to the forecast, the number of SVOD subscribers is set to rise to 22.2 million in 2024.
