TiVo OS has secured Freely certification for a new class of streaming media devices in the UK, opening the way for ISPs, altnets and retailers to offer broadcaster-led IPTV without the need for an aerial or DTT tuner.

The approval from Freely operator Everyone TV covers streaming-only hardware such as puck-style and HDMI-connected media players, and builds on TiVo OS’s existing certification for smart TVs.

The move means companion devices powered by TiVo OS can now deliver Freely live and on-demand services alongside TiVo’s content-first UX and access to global streaming apps, mirroring the experience on Freely-certified televisions. TiVo says this will allow partners to move faster with IP-based TV propositions and differentiate more confidently in a crowded market.

It opens up Freely to a wider range of products that consumers will be able to use for the PSB-backed streaming platform. Currently, Freely is available largely through TV sets, the one exception being Netgem’s £99 PLEIO steaming puck.

For ISPs and altnets rolling out full-fibre, the new device category offers a turnkey route to bundle Freely’s live TV over IP as part of broadband packages, with TiVo OS handling integration and service complexity. TiVo argues this can simplify deployments, boost customer satisfaction and support higher ARPU through value-added TV tiers.

UK retailers can meanwhile range Freely-certified streaming devices powered by TiVo OS on the shop floor, or launch own-brand hardware tied into their retail media and content strategies. With TiVo citing research that suggests one in three UK homes will be streaming-only by the end of 2025, rising to more than 70% within a decade, the company says the certification helps ensure Freely is available on the devices viewers increasingly use to access free-to-air IP television.
