[NEWS] OpenATV 8.0 Alpha
The Enigma2 world is buzzing as the first OpenATV 8.0 Alpha builds begin to surface in developer circles. While the stable branch (currently 7.x) remains the daily driver for most, version 8.0 represents a significant leap forward in the image’s underlying architecture.
Here is a look at what we know about the 8.0 Alpha and why it’s a big deal for satellite and cable enthusiasts.
The Foundation: Python 3.12 and OE-Alliance 5.5
The move to OpenATV 8.0 isn’t just about a fresh coat of paint; it’s about modernizing the “engine.”
- Python Upgrade: Following the successful transition from Python 2 to 3 in previous versions, 8.0 is built on Python 3.12. This brings improved execution speed and better memory management, which is vital for older hardware with limited RAM.
- OE-Alliance Core: The image is based on the new OE-Alliance 5.5 core. This ensures better compatibility with the latest drivers for newer 4K receivers (HiSilicon, Broadcom, and Amlogic chipsets).

2. Chromium and Web Browser Stability
One of the pain points of Enigma2 has always been the web browser. The 8.0 branch includes updated Chromium libraries, aiming to make HbbTV and streaming plugins (like Netflix or Disney+ wrappers) more stable and responsive.
3. Refined User Interface (MetrixHD)

Should You Install It?
As with any Alpha software, the usual warnings apply.
Pros Cons Access to the latest Linux kernels and drivers. High risk of “Green Screens” (crashes). Noticeably faster boot times on modern SoC. Many older plugins may not be compatible yet. Improved IPTV and 4K stream handling. Not recommended for your “main” living room box. Pro Tip: If you decide to test the Alpha, always perform a full image backup of your current stable setup (7.4 or 7.5) first. Use the “Flash Online” tool to install 8.0 into a different multiboot slot if your receiver supports it.

With the 8.0 image, there is now a major update in the Enigma2 core. For the Dreambox models, a completely new ION hardware acceleration backend has been implemented.
This should bring the OSD performance to a level similar to DreamOS.
Please test the new image and share your feedback. Also let us know if you run into any issues.
I was not able to test everything in full, but during my tests so far I did not notice any negative side effects.
