Former Google executive Matt Brittin has begun his tenure as BBC director-general, succeeding Tim Davie at a turbulent time for the corporation.

He faces immediate challenges including a multi-billion dollar lawsuit brought by US President Donald Trump, and the fallout from a racial slur being aired during the Bafta film awards.

Brittin, a former Olympic rower and Cambridge graduate, will receive an annual salary of £565,000.

Speaking outside Broadcasting House, he said:

“I’m really honoured and humbled to take the role. I’m very aware how complicated, uncertain and fast-changing the world is.

“When I look at the 100-year history of the BBC, how it has served its audiences, adapted at pace and risen in times of crisis, I believe the world needs the BBC more than ever — here in the UK and around the world.

“I look forward to listening, learning and leading with colleagues to serve audiences into the future.”
