German cable operator Tele Columbus has opened its fibre network to 1&1 under a long-term wholesale agreement that will extend access to fibre products to more than 1.2 million additional households across Germany.
The deal, of which financial terms were not disclosed, will connect 1&1’s nationwide fibre transport network with Tele Columbus’ regional infrastructure, covering both existing footprint areas and future expansion zones. The agreement marks a further step in Tele Columbus’ strategy to position itself as an open-access fibre operator while increasing utilisation of its infrastructure.
According to Tele Columbus, the partnership strengthens its wholesale business and broadens service options for housing-sector partners and tenants by adding another provider to its network while also supporting its aim of growing its role in the wholesale market.
“With 1&1, we are bringing a strong partner onto our fibre networks and opening infrastructure that reaches more than one million households and businesses,” said Christoph Lüthe, CEO of Tele Columbus. “Open networks are the engine for real competition, and this is where Tele Columbus is setting new benchmarks in quality and price.”
Tele Columbus operates fibre infrastructure reaching around three million households in Germany. Under its PŸUR brand, the company offers broadband, telephony and TV and streaming services, while PŸUR Business serves enterprise customers with connectivity, cloud and data-centre services.
1&1, part of telecommunications group United Internet, provides mobile and broadband services in Germany. Its broadband offer combines capacity from its own transport network operated by 1&1 Versatel with regional carrier networks and infrastructure from Deutsche Telekom.
