The European Broadcasting Union has elected RTÉ’s Brian Wynne as Chair of its new Technical Committee following the 32nd EBU Technical Assembly in Barcelona.

Wynne, Head of Technology Infrastructure at Ireland’s public broadcaster RTÉ, succeeds Michael Eberhard, Chief Technology Officer at ARD/SWR, who chaired the committee between 2024 and 2026.

The election took place during the EBU Technology & Innovation Summit, hosted by Spanish public broadcaster RTVE. The Technical Committee plays a central role in shaping the EBU’s technology strategy and coordinating collaboration between public service broadcasters on issues including media distribution, production technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and future broadcasting standards.

Joining Wynne in the leadership team are Simon Tuff from the BBC and Sasha Schwoll from ARD/SWR, who were elected as Vice-Chairs.

The new committee brings together senior technology leaders from broadcasters across Europe, reflecting the EBU’s increasingly collaborative approach to tackling industry-wide challenges. Members include representatives from France Télévisions, Lithuania’s LRT, Ukraine’s Suspilne, Austria’s ORF, Italy’s RAI, Denmark’s TV2, Portugal’s RTP, Croatia’s HRT, Spain’s RTVE and Belgium’s VRT.

The election comes at a time of significant technological change across the broadcasting sector, with public service media organisations increasingly focused on cloud transformation, AI-powered workflows, software-defined production and the development of open standards.

The outgoing Technical Committee recently recognised several of these developments through the EBU Technology & Innovation Awards, where Swedish broadcaster SVT won the 2026 award for its Neo software-defined live production platform, deployed during the Winter Olympics.

As Chair, Wynne will lead the committee’s work over the next two years, helping guide the EBU’s technology and innovation agenda as broadcasters adapt to rapidly changing audience behaviours and digital distribution models.
