Movistar Plus+ has appointed veteran producer and executive María Rubín as its new Head of Spanish Cinema, succeeding Guillermo Farré, who left the role earlier this month.
Rubín will report directly to Juan Andrés García Ropero, known as “Bropi”, Director of Content at Movistar Plus+, as the Spanish pay-TV platform continues to strengthen its commitment to local film production and talent development.
The appointment comes as Movistar Plus+ seeks to build on a strong period for its original film output and reinforce an editorial strategy focused on creative diversity, artistic excellence and support for both established and emerging filmmakers.
“Life is full of surprises. When I least expected it, it gave me this opportunity, which I am receiving with enormous excitement,” said Rubín. “I know it’s a great challenge, especially after the successes and joys that Movistar Plus films have brought us this past year.”
She added: “I know the bar is set very high, but I also know that I have something that has always been with me: a deep passion for Spanish cinema.”
Rubín has spent much of her career within the Movistar Plus+ and Canal+ organisations, holding a variety of editorial and production roles including news producer and head of the Short Films department.
Her television credits include directing programmes such as La Noche + Corta, Madonna: Pop & Clips, 3D Plus, Las mil una galaxias, El sonido de la velocidad, Opina, vota y disfruta and La Palma rueda. She has also worked on international co-productions including Imagina with Canal+ France and Le Grand Mix for Canal Jimmy.
Outside the broadcaster, Rubín has been involved in a range of cultural and industry initiatives, including serving as curator of the Cultures project organised by Spain’s Ministry of Culture and participating in international film development programmes such as Next Gen Film FinLab.
The appointment forms part of a wider reorganisation within the content division of Movistar Plus+, where Rubín joins a leadership team that includes Bruna Hernando, Head of Movistar Plus+ Originals for fiction and non-fiction programming.
Movistar Plus+ said the appointment underlines its continued commitment to promoting Spanish cinema and supporting creators whose work reflects the diversity of contemporary Spanish storytelling.
